Privacy policy

Updated 8 November 2026

This policy explains what information Smart Selective (“we”, “us”) collects at smartselective.com, why, and how we protect it. We aim to handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Using the site without an account

You can use every test and practice set without an account. Your child's answers and progress are then saved only in your own browser (local storage) on that device. We do not receive them.

Parent accounts

If a parent creates an account, we collect:

  • name and e-mail address (and, if you sign in with Google, your Google account ID and profile picture link);
  • a password, which we store only as a secure one-way hash;
  • child profiles: a nickname and year level only. Please do not use your child's full name;
  • test results you choose to save: scores, answers and the time taken.

We use this information only to run your account, show your child's progress and send account e-mails (such as e-mail confirmation and password reset).

Children

The site is designed for parents. Children do not create accounts, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Error reports and contact

If you report an error or contact us, we receive your message and any e-mail address you give, and use them only to respond and to fix the problem.

Cookies and similar technologies

  • Essential cookies: a secure session cookie when you sign in, and a small cookie that tells pages you are signed in.
  • Google reCAPTCHA protects our forms from spam and abuse. It is subject to Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
  • Analytics: we may use Google Analytics to understand which pages are useful, with IP anonymisation. It does not identify you to us.
  • Advertising: if we show ads in future, we will update this policy first, including how to control personalised ads.

Sharing

We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the site (hosting, e-mail delivery, Google sign-in and reCAPTCHA), or if required by law. Some of these providers may store data outside Australia.

Security and retention

Data is sent over HTTPS, passwords are hashed and access to our servers is restricted. We keep account data while your account is active, and delete it when you ask us to.

Your choices

You can see and delete child profiles in your account at any time. To access, correct or delete your account information, e-mail [email protected]. If you are unhappy with how we handled your information, contact us first; you can also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
